fashion friday- turban headbands

h
IMG_2591
I have been growing my hair out for what seems like years (finally its all grown out!) and a couple of years back I started making turban style headbands so that I could wear my hair back (during that "in between stage") while making a fashion statement. And for the last couple of years I've been receiving TONS of inquiries about how I create them. So I have FINALLY put together a little tutorial on how I make them and wear them!

h
1. I always use jersey fabric because its nice and stretchy. I've had the best luck with using men's size large t-shirts because the width of the t-shirt perfectly wraps around my head twice OR once in a while I'll upcycle something that I have on hand- like this striped maternity dress. 2. I cut wide strips about 8-10 inches wide. I make use of the seam already sewn into the garment.

You can get three wide head bands from a mens size large t-shirt

4. I cut 2-3 strips (which becomes the headband) so I can layer them together.

i
To wear I start by wrapping it around my head twice and then I layer the 2nd and 3rd once the same way. This creates nice volume and is the key to creating the look of a turban.

There are all kinds of ways to wear the turban headband- with your hair pulled back

s
or over your forehead

IMG_2603
you can pull all your hair up into it and even layer different colors or styles-

c
like braiding the jersey or creating rosettes

however you choose to wear your headband- its the perfect solution for a bad hair day, growing your hair out or a chic alternative for styling your hair!

ALISA! You are my savior- my hair has been falling out recently because of my thyroid disease- I bought a few scarves to die around my head but they simply fall off. I can't wait to try this! Thanks for the inspiration! xoxo

  11. i have long hair and tried this before a few times. But it doesn't look good on me, I think it has something to do with the shape of my face.
And you are such a beautiful woman by the way !

    1. I had a similar problem because my face is quite round, maybe u have the same issue? If u use different layers to achieve some height on the top, it tricks the eye into thinking the face is more oval .. there are also various make-up tricks to help. :)

  14. I have been growing my bangs out for-ever or at least since the fall!) Just today I was able to pull it back into a barrette behind my head instead of on top. I can see the end of the dorky-hair-grow-out days tunnel especially now that I have this bit of fashion fire-power in my arsenal. Thanks for sharing as I've been admiring your turbans from afar (really, I live in Ohio.) Have a great day.

  41. So glad I found your blog. This is a great idea, going to try it tomorrow. I am letting my gray grow out and I have long hair. It should ease the shock to those who might otherwise see a gray stripe down the middle of the top of my head that looks like a skunk stripe. lol

  42. You are a very, very gorgeous woman. Your hair is what some would call "to die for"! Thank you for these tutorials. I noticed at least one lady talked about her hair falling out. I've had this problem for quite some time due to illness, as well. I also have a receding hair line. My hair is shoulder length and longer in the back, fine and has a bit of a wave at the bottom. These hair bands and turban bands are the perfect solution. I don't sew....these tutorials make it look easy. I am grateful to you for letting us know about this. There are a lot of us out there who NEED this sort of fashion idea. It's so hard for a woman to lose her hair. It's an awful thing. Thank you.
